Philip José Farmer had two great literary loves, Tarzan and Doc Savage. He wrote biographies, pastiches, and authorized novels of each and continually referenced both of his heroes throughout his career.
In 2021, Meteor House published The Man Who Met Tarzan, a collection of Farmer’s articles, essays, letters, and speeches about Edgar Rice Burroughs and Tarzan.
Now we are thrilled to announce the publication of Savageology, a supermalagorgeous volume (as Johnny Littlejohn would say) collecting Farmer’s writings about Doc (excluding the biography Doc Savage: His Apocalyptic Life and authorized novel Escape from Loki): essays, pastiches, and even a screen treatment for the second, unmade Doc Savage film!
Also included in this unique collection are works by writers and artists who followed the Savageology trail blazed by Farmer: Iason Ragnar Bellerophon, Christopher Paul Carey, Win Scott Eckert, and R. Paul Sardanas. Additionally we have two pieces by Bronze Gazette editor Chuck Welch, a lengthy interview with Farmer by Doc Savage author and historian Will Murray, and interior and cover art by Keith Howell.
The pieces by Farmer include:
- Writing Doc’s Biography
- The Grant Robeson Papers
- Savage Shadow
- Doc Savage and the Cult of the Blue God (screen treatment for the second, unmade Doc film!)
- Afterword to Doc Savage Omnibus #13
- The Monster on Hold (original proposed chapters and outline from 1983; not the full novel completed by Win Scott Eckert)
- Doc Wildman’s Coat of Arms
. . . plus more Doc-related ephemera from Farmer’s “Magic Filing Cabinet!”
This book will be available in Trade Paperback and Signed Hardcover Limited Editions (signed by Bellerophon, Carey, Eckert, Howell, Murray, Sardanas, and Welch). The hardcover features a leatherette cover with bronze foil stamping and custom printed color end papers—a high quality collectible in the tradition of Meteor House’s prior limited edition hardcovers.
As always, the print run of the Signed Hardcover Limited Edition will be determined by the number of preorders we receive. We’re taking preorders now and both editions will ship in late August 2025, after debuting at PulpFest/ FarmerCon/DocCon/ERBFest.
